Plumbing is the only trade where your main competition is not the firm down the road. It is British Gas, Homeserve and half a dozen boiler-on-finance companies with budgets you cannot match. The good news is they are beatable, just not on the ground they have already bought.
01The competition Who you are actually up against.
Search "emergency plumber" with no town attached and you get national operators and directories. That is a bought result and there is no point going for it.
Now add a town, or a village, or a postcode. The nationals thin out immediately, because they have no premises there, no local reviews and nothing genuinely specific to say about the area. That is your ground, and it is where the jobs you actually want live: people within twenty minutes of your van.
Which means the strategy is the opposite of what most plumbers assume. Not bigger. Narrower.
02The calendar Winter is predictable, which is the whole advantage.
A roofer cannot know when the next storm lands. You know exactly when your phone starts ringing: the first proper cold snap, every year, without fail. Boilers that were fine in September fail the week they are asked to work.
That predictability is worth using, and almost nobody does. Pages about boiler breakdowns and frozen pipes want to be live and indexed by September, so they have authority before the demand arrives. Written in November they are competing from nothing, in the one month where every plumber in the country is writing the same thing.
The same goes the other way. Summer is when you should be chasing bathroom work and annual services, because that is when people plan them.
03The levers What actually moves the needle for a plumber.
- Own the town, not the county You cannot outrank a national brand for "emergency plumber". You can beat them comfortably for your town and the six villages around it, because they have no premises there and no local reviews.
- The map pack, and the speed of the call A burst pipe is the most urgent search in any trade. People tap the first map result and if it rings out they tap the second within a minute. Being listed is half of it; being answered is the other half.
- A real boiler installation page The biggest job you do deserves more than a line on a services page. Prices, brands, how long it takes, what happens to the old one. The boiler-finance companies win this search because they answer the questions.
- Gas Safe visible in the first screen People search for it by name and check the register before they book. If a customer has to hunt for your number, you have added a reason to hesitate at exactly the wrong moment.
04The repeat The annual service almost nobody chases.
You fit a boiler. It carries a guarantee that usually depends on an annual service. Twelve months later that service is due, the customer has forgotten, and unless something reminds them they will ring whoever comes up on Google, possibly not you.
Every boiler you have ever fitted is a service booking waiting to happen. It is the cheapest work you will ever win, because you already have the customer, the address and their number.
This is less an SEO problem than a follow-up one, and it is the part of the package that probably pays for itself fastest in this trade. The reminder goes out on its own, a year after the job, whether or not you remembered.

Included, and it runs on its own
A missed call still becomes a job.
This is the same system every site here is wired into. The text goes out whether you remember or not.
- It fires in about eight seconds Before they have scrolled to the next name in the results.
- They reply while it is still in their head And it is waiting for you when you come down off the job.
- You do nothing at all Evenings, weekends, and the days you leave your phone in the van.
05The price What it costs.
£297 a month. Site, missed-call text-back, review funnel, follow-up, one inbox and a business number that is not your mobile. No build fee, no minimum term, and no cheaper tier with half of it taken out. Full breakdown here.
For plumbers the missed-call text-back is close to the whole argument on its own. You are under a sink with the water off and the phone goes. Ninety seconds later that caller has rung the next plumber on the list. A text that goes out automatically while you are still holding a wrench keeps the job alive.
06The awkward ones Common questions from plumbers.
01 How do I compete with the big national plumbing companies?
You do not, not head on. They win the generic national searches because they spend on them. What they cannot do is be genuinely local in your town with fifty reviews from streets people recognise. Narrow the target and you win the ground that actually pays.
02 When should I start if I want to be ready for winter?
September at the latest, and honestly the summer is better. Boiler and burst pipe searches climb from the first proper cold snap, and a page published in November is competing from a standing start against pages that have been there for months.
03 Are bought plumbing leads worth it?
They cost around £29 a lead and get shared, so you are quoting against two or three others who got the same call. They work as a stopgap while your own rankings build. They are a bad permanent arrangement, because the price only ever goes one way.
04 I do bathrooms as well as call-outs. Same site?
Same site, separate sections, and treat them as two different businesses in how you write them. Someone with no hot water and someone planning a bathroom for the spring have nothing in common except your phone number.
05 Is Gas Safe registration worth putting everywhere?
On the home page, the boiler pages and the contact page, yes. It is the one credential a nervous customer knows to look for, and the register is public so they can check it. Just do not plaster it on pages about unblocking a sink.
06 How much of this can I do myself?
The Google Business Profile, honestly. Categories, photos and asking every customer for a review will get you a long way and costs nothing but the nagging. Where I earn my money is the website side and making the follow-up happen without you.
Anything else, ask on a call, twenty minutes, in my calendar. Other trades are here, and if you do electrical work too there is an electrician version of this page.
This page is about being found. If what you actually need is the site itself, what goes on it, in what order, and why the emergency call decides the whole layout. That is the plumbing website page.
If you want me to look at your town and tell you which searches the nationals have actually got locked up, that's twenty minutes and it costs you nothing. Book a call. Tell me what's going on.
