Letter No 06 — WebsitesFor UK service businesses

Local web designer — SEO-built sites for small businesses.

Most agency websites are pretty. Mine are pretty AND fast AND ranked. To be honest, that isn't a luxury for a service business — it's the difference between a Google searcher finding you in the top three results, or finding your competitor instead. So I build sites that work for the customer who needs you, the consultant who's hunting your weaknesses, and the Google crawler that decides who shows up.

I sell SEO consulting, website work and content. So you should know up front that's the bias. I'd rather you knew than have me pretend I'm neutral.

Why SEO-first matters.

A website that ranks does three jobs at once:

  • Earns free traffic from Google month after month
  • Converts that traffic into actual phone calls and form fills
  • Keeps you off the paid-ads treadmill

Most "designer" websites only do the second one, badly. By the way, a beautiful site that Google can't read is worth less than a plain one that ranks number one. So I build the rank-first version, then make it beautiful.

01

Wireframe + content plan

Page-by-page wireframe, every section mapped to a search query, internal-link structure decided before design begins.

02

Design + build

Astro + Tailwind + Cloudflare Pages. Mobile-first, accessible, fast by default. Custom design, not a template.

03

Launch + 30-day tune

Schema markup, sitemap, Google Search Console wiring, 30 days of post-launch tweaks while traffic settles in.

The stack I build on.

  • Astro — static-first framework. Renders HTML at build time, ships almost no JavaScript by default. So it's properly fast.
  • Tailwind — utility CSS. Custom design, zero design-template feel.
  • Cloudflare Pages — hosts the site on Cloudflare's global edge. Loads in under a second from anywhere in the world.
  • Resend + Turnstile — form submissions, email delivery, anti-spam, all handled without a Wordpress plugin in sight.

What you actually buy.

A custom-designed, SEO-first website. Five-to-ten pages typically for a service business; more if you're a multi-location operation. Built on a stack that's faster, safer and cheaper to run than what you're probably using now.

SEO consulting usually runs alongside the build — there's no point launching a beautiful new site that doesn't rank. Most clients combine the two.

WordPress vs Astro.

Short version: if your site needs WooCommerce, a complex membership area, or 200 pages of user-generated content, stay on WordPress. If your site is a brochure-plus-blog-plus-forms that needs to rank, convert, and not break — move to Astro. Don't worry, the migration is less painful than you think.

What it costs.

Honest answer: I don't publish pricing on this site, on purpose. Website-build scope varies a lot — small five-page builds, multi-location operations, e-commerce-adjacent work — and a generic price would either over-quote you or under-quote me.

Drop your URL into the free audit; the audit tells me what you've got now and what the rebuild would need to cover. Then we have a quick call to talk through scope, and I come back with a fixed number tailored to your business. Don't worry, no obligation either way.

Common questions.

Why Astro and not WordPress?

Astro builds static HTML that loads in under a second, ranks better in Google, and never breaks at 2am because a plugin updated badly. WordPress is fine — for blogs, for shops, for sites someone else has to maintain. To be honest, for a small service-business site that needs to convert visitors into enquiries, Astro is just faster, safer, and cheaper to run.

Does the site work without me touching code?

Yes. Content lives in markdown files I can update for you, or I can hook up a small admin so you (or whoever updates your site) edits content in a browser. By the way, you never need to touch a server, a database, or a plugin update screen.

How fast is the site?

Properly built Astro sites on Cloudflare typically score 95+ on PageSpeed mobile, with Largest Contentful Paint under 1.5 seconds globally. So that's faster than 99% of WordPress sites I audit, including most agency builds.

What about ongoing maintenance?

There isn't much. There's no WordPress to update, no plugins to break, no PHP version migrations. You can take a maintenance retainer if you want monthly content tweaks, design changes, or SEO tuning — see the website maintenance page for that. Otherwise, the site looks after itself.

Do you also write the copy?

Yes, if you want me to — see SEO content. Most clients write a rough first draft (you know your business better than I do) and I rework it for SEO + conversion. Some hand the whole job to me; that's fine too.

If you want me to look at your current site and tell you whether a rebuild would actually pay back — that takes me a working day, and the audit is free. Send the URL over — let me know what's going on.
